Our New Building
Cumbernauld Theatre is delighted to be working in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council on an innovative shared campus: alongside the new Cumbernauld Academy will be a new Arts Centre for Cumbernauld and beyond.
The new Arts Centre will include a theatre, cinema and bistro with superb facilities for drama, dance, music and film which will enable us to present a wider range of performances, bringing great experiences for audiences and world-class facilities for classes, workshops and community participation.
Funded by Creative Scotland and North Lanarkshire Council, Cumbernauld Theatre already has a national and international reputation.
Our new Arts Centre will allow us to build on our innovative, high quality arts provision:
= Our own highly praised Christmas productions and award winning co-productions
= Visiting artists, touring theatre and music events
= Creative Learning programmes enjoyed by thousands of people each year
Cumbernauld Theatre is much loved by its audiences and participants. It was founded in the early 1960’s by a group of committed community members; and the building was subsequently extended in the 1970’s with the addition of a larger theatre space.
However, the building has remained largely unchanged in the intervening 42 years and is now nearing the end of its useful life as it struggles to keep up with the changing expectations of audiences, participants and visiting artists. The significant investment required simply to maintain the current aging building has led directly to the need to build a new Arts Centre in North Lanarkshire.
We will be finalising our plans with our stakeholders North Lanarkshire Council and Creative Scotland over the coming months. Please watch this space for further announcements.
