Jason and the Argonauts
Jason’s uncle isn’t exactly lovable…he’s murdered his brother (the king) and stolen the crown and now no one dares stand up to him. Things are about to get a major shake-up though because Jason is BACK! After being banished as a baby, our wannabe hero returns to claim his rightful throne and make some big changes.
We chatted to Visible Fictions’ Artistic Director, Dougie Irvine about his take on this fantastic adventure:
What makes your interpretation of this story unique?
Our take on this famous Greek myth is fairly irreverent! We stick to the story but stray occasionally. For example, Jason’s Argonauts are played by action figures, and as for the dragon that guards the Golden Fleece, you will have to see the show to find out how we tackle that one!
Why do ancient myths still appeal to modern audiences?
I think these myths are from a mystical time where super heroes existed! Gods clashing, huge and terrifying monsters roaming the land, and mortal humans going on extraordinary quests to prove their bravery – what’s not to like? They have everything a good story should have, action, adventure, love, bravery and adversity.
How do audiences react to this production?
Our two actors, Simon and Tim, regenerate such a rapport with the audience that the young people are right behind them through the tales ups and downs. They become totally immersed in a world of drama and play that carries them through the fast pace and swift character changes. It’s a roller coaster ride of a show which people love.
