Youth Theatre Classes
Cumbernauld Theatre has a vibrant, exciting and inclusive Youth Theatre for young people age 3 and over.
We currently offer weekly workshops in DRAMA and MUSICAL THEATRE, aiming to develop performance skills through the use of games, storytelling, role play, improvisation and movement. Our focus is firmly on FUN, but these activities can also help to develop confidence levels, increase social awareness and build teamwork skills.
Our workshop programme is arranged into three terms per year, each term lasting eight – ten weeks. These terms usually follow the school calendar in relation to holidays.
The 2015 Spring/Summer Term runs from April – June, and will be a PERFORMANCE TERM. This means that each week, participants will be rehearsing towards a mini-performance that will take place on the main stage. This will take place as part of Cumbernauld Youth Theatre’s Drama Festival (Fri 26th June – Sat 27th June) – more information to follow.
The classes are arranged into age groups – a timetable of individual classes can be seen by clicking on the image below.

Wee Class (3-4 year olds)
Sessions for this age group are all about creative play – games, singing, dancing, arts and crafts and storytelling. These activities will be tutor led and highly interactive to introduce children to imaginary worlds and colourful characters!
Mini Class (P1 & P2)
The Mini Class uses storytelling and story acting to continue the creative process, whilst further enhancing social skills, movement and coordination, imagination and voice for both personal development and performance.
Little Class (P3 & P4)
These sessions additionally aim to introduce more detailed dramatic content, perhaps using voice, movement and facial expression to develop a character, or using mime, narration or chorus work to enhance their storytelling techniques.
Junior Class (P5 & 6) and Young Class (P7)
The Junior Class and Young Class focus much more on drama and performance skills. Participants may be asked to respond to a stimulus using improvisation and group work to create and present scenes to their peers before offering creative and constructive feedback on shared performances.
Intermediate (S1 & S2) and Senior (S3+)
Our older participants will use more advanced techniques and detailed activities to structure, create and develop their own understanding. This may involve using text, movement sequences or devising from a stimulus to share work with their peers and offer creative feedback.
These popular classes offer highly energetic activities that explore the combined acting, singing and dance techniques required of this specialist art form. Classes are arranged by age to provide opportunities for studying appropriate content and progressive delivery, whilst the development of performance techniques and working as an ensemble underpin the content of the workshops.
All classes are jam packed with exciting, dynamic and imaginative activities for young people; activities which use drama to increase individual confidence and unlock creativity! Classes at Cumbernauld Theatre are the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.
